Sujit Choudhry Active Supporter and Authority on Comparative Law

One of the biggest names in the field of law and constitutional reforms is that of Sujit Choudhry, an internationally acclaimed authority on comparative law. Sujit Choudhry has been working on propagating the fundamentals of comparative law for last many years and has even co-founded, Center for Constitutional Reforms to generate, mobilize, and discuss various aspects of comparative law in a formative manner. For any country to be stable and progressive, its constitution needs to be updated with time and its political and social structure should be strong. One of the countries that have been facing a lot of internationally driven as well as home grew crisis for a long time due to weak policies and government is Ukraine. The country has been under a lot of pressure from the international community to change the way it functions and bring some necessary changes in its political structure to stabilize the unrest in the country.

Sujit Choudhry attended the conference that was held in Kiev recently and was organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance and Center of Policy and Legal Reforms. Sujit Choudhry believes that it is essential for the country to have a fair and transparent electoral system, which is presently lacking in Ukraine. Sujit Choudhry mentioned the fact that the semi-presidential system that Ukraine follows can also be blamed for the indecisiveness of the government and why it has not been able to formulate or implement any high political or democratic measures for so long. Sujit said that semi-presidential system dilutes the power at the top that contributes to the development of a less cohesive government, which in turn, creates the formation of a weak government.  To read more of his shared views, head over to ceocfointerviews.com.

The Unique Creativity And Artistry Of Richard Mishaan Designs

Richard Mishaan Design is about taking the ordinary and transforming it into the extroidianary. He is a master at bold colors, mixing different styles of furniture, exquisite statutory, and unique art. Richard Mishaan was born to be a designer. An excellent example is his home in New York. The colors are rich and vibrant and accented beautifully by his choices in art and sculpture. He has placed the works of Niki de Saint Phalle and Donald Baechler to accompany his central park view to perfection. His home reflects Richard Mishaan Design in all of its glory.

Richard Mishaan Design has taken the concept of a lavish spread to new heights. He designed a penthouse duplex for a businessman in Manhattan with exemplary style. The creation of a limestone stair hall is magnificent and the custom basket weave in the pattern is a reflection of his talent and creativity. Richard Mishaan’s retreat in Cartagena has vaulted ceilings and the wooden boards are all original. The retreat is influenced with a Spanish-colonial flair and the look works incredibly well. Richard Mishaan Design is also well represented in his home for the weekends in Sagaponack. The feel is relaxed, comfortable, and very much the style of a resort. From the lighthearted KAWS statue to the Ferrari surfboard the home is a delight.

The second book Richard Mishaan wrote is called Artfully Modern and it captures the spirit of Richard Mishaan Design. This is a high end book and filled with pages alive with the colors and styles that will captivate anyone who looks at the pages. The rooms are at the opposite end of average yet the creativity and colors seem to call to the soul. These designs are the result of the skill of a true artist. Richard Mishaan Designs has carved its own niche in the world of design and it is glorious.

Sujit Choudhry’s Mission to Democratize the Globe

Bridging the gap that impedes effective counseling on constitution creation in emerging democracies, created by inadequate, out-dated and non-existent research, Sujit Choudhry’s Center for Constitutional Transition provides advisory and drafting services, promoting the efforts of those governments with increasing the participation of their citizenry.

The center works with global multilateral governance entities, think tanks and non-governmentally affiliated organizations to provide policy-making, evidence-based support to international leaders. Constitutional Transitions is a project-driven, expert-focused organization. The center brings together leading scholars and senior policy practitioners to assist forming and transitioning democracies globally.

Recognized internationally for his expertise in his field, Sujit Choudhry has provided advisory constitution creation services for the diverse global communities including South Africa, Egypt, Libya, Ukraine, Jordan, Sri Lanka and Tunisia.  Refer to blogs.law.nyu.edu for related article.

He began his legal career serving as a law clerk to Antonio Lamer, the Canadian Supreme Court’s Chief Justice. Later in his career, Choudhry represented high-profile cases before Canada’s highest court.

Choudhry obtained his legal training from Oxford and Harvard and currently holds a teaching post as the I. Michael Heyman Professor of Law at University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

As an administrator, Choudhry was exposed to the reality that it is not always a reasonable objective to prioritize making everyone happy with policy-defining decisions. He found that it is frequently the case that the end result of sound decisions can mean that no one is fully satisfied.

A constantly changing environment attracts Choudhry to the constitution creation process. The dynamic environment allows him to direct his efforts to his passion for this field. Since 1978, Choudhry informs that there have been more than 185 new constitutions modified or created anew. The Constitutional Center for Transition has worked with more than 50 experts from over 25 countries. Check on this for additional article.

Larkin & Lacey

This is a radical feminist organization that sprung out of France and Ukraine. Larkin and Lacey use what they call “sextremism” to get their message across. “Sextremism” consists of protesting topless, as well as putting on big shows during protests that simulate sexual acts.

The point of this method is to belittle the patriarchal barriers that limit women in society and to question women’s gender roles. The women’s body has a lot of meanings and stigmas attached to it, and they believe the the exhibition of the nude female form challenges these meanings and stigmas.

Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood can trace it’s roots back to the efforts of Margaret Sanger. In 1916, Margaret Sanger opened up the first birth control clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where she gave birth control information to women. The authorities raided the clinic, and accused her of spreading obscene information. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: http://www.laceyandlarkinfronterafund.org/about-lacey-larkin-frontera-fund/ and http://www.laceyandlarkinfronterafund.org/about-lacey-larkin-frontera-fund/relevant-links/

She was jailed, and eventually let out. She traveled the country, giving information on birth control. Margaret Sanger established the Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau in 1923, and eventually merged this organization with the American Birth Control League to form Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Planned Parenthood has took part in fighting for the right to disseminate information about birth control, provide birth control and provide abortions.

Margaret Sanger, as well as other proponents of contraception, made efforts that lead to a court ruling in 1936 that birth control devices were not obscene and that they could be handed out in Connecticut, Vermont and New York.

However, many states still denied access to contraceptives, even to married couples, until a law in 1965 stated that states could not keep married couples from contraceptives. Planned Parenthood currently provides care for people who need sexual education, abortions, contraception and testing for venereal diseases.

Planned Parenthood is still fighting for it’s plight, since there are many people who oppose contraception and abortion, and many states have put laws into place that make it harder to attain contraceptives and abortions.

Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin care very much about the civil rights of gays, lesbians, transgender people, bisexual people, immigrants and Hispanics. Because of their consideration toward these groups of people, they established the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, a fund that funnels money to organizations that support the plights of these people. The founders saw that there were grave injustices and human sufferings going on at the border between Arizona and Mexico.

Earthjustice

Earthjustice is a legal organization that protects the environment. In partakes in court cases in order to protect the environment. However, it also educates the public about issues concerning the environment . This may not initially seem like a “civil rights” organization, though in a way it is because people have the right to live in clean, healthy environments free of pollutants.

Earthjustice was founded in 1971, but has it’s roots in activities going as far back as 1965. On their website, they list the landmark cases that they have been involved in, starting from the most recent.

Earthjustice is all for preservation of the environment and the encouragement of clean energy sources. It is against human activities that lead to pollution, such as mining and drilling; as well as human activities that that deplete resources such as fishing.

Constitutional Authority Sujit Choudhry Attends Workshop in Ukraine

Despite the controversy that swirled around the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the transition of power unfolded smoothly on Inauguration Day. This reflects the ongoing power and resiliency of the United States Constitution, which is regarded by many to be among the finest documents of its type ever produced. In fact, it is so highly regarded that countries around the world turn to it when seeking to transition to democratic governments. That is the case regarding the Ukraine, which since the fall of communism has famously struggled to strike an even keel with the balance of power in its government. Recently, comparative constitutional law expert Sujit Choudhry attended a workshop in Kiev, Ukraine, to discuss the challenges that the country is facing.

The workshop took place in Kiev, Ukraine, on July 10. In addition to Sujit Choudhry, numerous constitutional scholars were there to assist. The main topic of interest was the semi-presidential system of government of the Ukraine and the resulting constitutional challenges that are faced by the fledgling democracy. Ultimately, the discussion revolved around finding ways to improve governmental processes in Ukraine. With so many renowned minds in one room, it is safe to say that a lot of headway was made.

The attendance list for the Kiev workshop is a veritable who’s-who of constitutional law expertise. In attendance were Sergyi Holovatyi, who is a member of the Constitutional Commission of Ukraine as well as the Venice Commission; Sumit Bisarya of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, or International IDEA; Vladimir Vasilenko, who represents Ukraine on the United Nations Human Rights council; Viktor Musiaka, who is a representative of the president in Supreme Council 1996; and Thomas Sidelius of Dalarna University. The workshop was hosted by the Center of Policy and Legal Reform, which is a major Ukraine think tank, as well as International IDEA, which supports sustainable democracy around the world.

A variety of topics were discussed during the workshop, which was regarded as being highly productive. More than anything else, discussion focused on the ongoing instability of democratization in Ukraine, which has mostly been an issue because of the concentration of power in the presidency. Unlike the U.S., then, the country doesn’t have a balanced system of checks and balances, so democratic policies are more difficult to implement.

The scholars and experts, including Sujit Choudhry, also discussed the separation of powers within the dual executive branch. The government of Ukraine does not have just a president; it has a prime minister as well, so that is another way in which the government of this country differs from that of the United States. Another issue that was discussed to a great extent was the fact that the political parties of Ukraine are very weak. As a result, it is difficult for citizens to know parties’ stances on issues, and many other problems arise. The electoral system for the legislature of the country is also a major issue, and the experts focused on this one for a while as well.

As founding director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, Sujit Choudhry has a unique understanding of the issues that are currently being faced by the Ukraine. The Center for Constitutional Transitions is currently conducting research into semi-presidentialism and constitutional instability in Ukraine. Ever since communism fell, the country has struggled to implement an effective democratic government. The legislature has overwhelmingly been far too weak, and the president has had far too much power. The organization hopes that its research will provide much-needed guidance to the country to help it establish a strong democratic government. For more of his insight on certain issue, click activistpost.com.

Ultimately, the goal of both the Center for Constitutional Transitions and those who gathered in Kiev on July 10 is to help Ukraine to develop a strong semi-presidential system of government. The work will not be easy to achieve, however, as the process has been underway for more than two decades already and very little real progress has been made. With so many great minds working on the issue, however, it is hoped that some real progress will be made in the very near future.  Check this relevant law blog on thereisnoconsensus.com

Scholars and researchers who have been working on this issue, both at the workshop in Kiev and at the Center for Constitutional Transitions, which is helmed by Sujit Choudhry, have identified many potential options that could help to establish a secure semi-presidential system in the country. This is an important and even crucial goal for a number of reasons, including:

  • To produce a strong, effective legislature that can exercise oversight over the president and the government as a whole. This will help to strike a better balance of power, which will facilitate the process of building a strong democratic government.
  • To facilitate an effective sharing of power between the president and the prime minister of the country. Up until now, far too much power has been concentrated in the office of the president, and this is one of the many reasons why Ukraine has struggled so much.
  • To ensure limited presidential power. When the president has an excessive amount of power, true democracy is impossible, and the country suffers.
  • To develop a government that is strengthened by presidential leadership during crises. Otherwise, the country flounders when major catastrophes occur, and the democratization process is weakened and threatened.

Sujit Choudhry was a welcome addition to the special workshop that was held in Kiev on July 10. An expert on comparative constitutional law, Choudhry holds law degrees from the University of Toronto, Oxford University and Harvard University. He also served as law clerk to Chief Justice Antonio Lamer of the Supreme Court of Canada. As the founder of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, Sujit Choudhry has played an instrumental role in constitution building processes of countries around the world. The organization has more than 50 experts in more than 25 nations. Right now, it is co-leading three collaborative global research projects, including the one about semi-presidentialism in Ukraine.  .
