The philanthropist George Soros has changed the landscape of politics worldwide. This is because he has begun promoting democracy all around the globe with his nonprofit the Open Society Foundations. This nonprofit is in existence in order to support healthy democracies in every country around the globe. They believe in not only establishing democracies to helping those democracies stay accountable to the people they serve. While many people rightfully see this as a positive endeavor, the political right has become fearful because Soros’ power has grown and he is spreading leftist ideals. His Open Society Foundations has given hundreds of billions of dollars over the past several decades in order to see democracies bloom in Third World countries. This global influence, mixed with his vast amounts of wealth, is the reason that George Soros has earned the title the bogeyman of the right.
George Soros stands against everything the conservative right believes. He stands for equality, civil rights, immigration rights, basic income for all, human rights, and LGBTQ rights. He has used the Open Society Foundations as well as his $26 billion of net worth to constantly stop the policy changes that the GOP tries to create.
One of the earliest incidences where we see George Soros using his nonprofit to affect change in the political landscape of the United States is in 2004 during the presidential run of John Kerry. During this time the United States was already at war with Afghanistan and Iraq because of the leading of President George W. Bush. George Soros could not tolerate another right-leaning president for another four years. He vowed that he would put an end to the reign of President George Bush. In order to accomplish that goal, he gave the Kerry campaign $27 million. Unfortunately, this was not enough to secure victory.
George Soros would have a better time affecting change in the United States of America during the 2008 election. George Soros ultimately chose to back Barack Obama, the Senator from Illinois. He saw in Barack Obama a man who had the heart and the trust of the people, a man who could influence them with liberal ideas, and a man who can make the people love what the left has to offer. Barack Obama would be the first African-American president and also serve in the Whitehouse for two terms.
George Soros would again throw his financial weight around during the 2016 presidential election. If George Soros thought the stakes were high during 2004, he must have thought they were out of this world in 2016. Here we saw the unlikely Republican candidate, Donald Trump, begin to gain in the polls and catch up to Hillary Clinton. George Soros did not want to let Donald Trump in the White House. In response to Donald Trump’s nomination, George Soros gave Hillary Clinton’s campaign $25 million in order to compete. He also gave several million dollars to Democratic Senators who were trying to gain senatorial seats in purple states.
