Jim and Mike are also the founders and owner Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media, which are renowned newspapers in Arizona. In 2007, the sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio, arrested them for writing a story that exposed a grand jury that as corrupt and favored him during rulings.
Arpaio used to abuse his power as a sheriff and illegally profiled immigrants at highway checkpoints. The sheriff arrested Michael and Jim from their homes for revealing the secrets of the jury to the public.

The attorney general of the county felt that the charges against the two journalists were malicious and he dropped them. The Fifth Amendment rights of the Jim and Michael had been violated by the Maricopa County authorities, and therefore, they sued the government.
The cased was heard by a US Court of Appeal judge, and he awarded them a settlement fee of the $3.75 million. The duo used the money as capital for establishing the Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund, which has been bettering the lives of the minorities in Arizona by fighting for their rights.
